Rani Mukerji is one of the very few actresses in Bollywood who has never had to make an ‘effort’ to act. She is not only that fine an actor but it has more to do with her natural capabilities as an actor. And that comes across in Hichki. This is supposedly Mukerji’s comeback film, but one look at the trailer and you’d think ‘where did she even go’? Rani doesn’t seem to have lost her chops even a bit! She seems that promising, and for the lack of a better term, REAL.
Hichki traces the life of a middle-aged woman (Naina Mathur) who suffers from Tourette Syndrome, due to which there are sudden shocks she deals with in the middle of any and everywhere. And these are her ‘hiccups’. But, she thinks and knows she was born to be a teacher so she applies for a job at a high profile school and of course she is not accepted at first. When later she is, she is supposed to teach 14 students who have come from a municipal school and are outcasted. Teaching them is her responsibility. They are wild, stick chewing gums beneath their tables, smoke cigarettes in class and put flyers with Naina’s number all over the city. This is not just her responsibility, but also her struggle.
We are just very glad Rani is back! Directed by Sidharth P Malhotra, the film releases on 23rd February, 2018.
