While my plans of bringing in Christmas were eventually nothing, my friend decided that we should watch a said B-grade Hindi film on Amazon Prime, because why not! We ended up scrolling through the collection of films that the website had to offer, declining films like Hum Saath Saath Hain, Vivah and Mujhse Fraandship Karoge, though I’d place HSSH in the A minus grade. But anyway, so we ended up watching Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in lead roles and Bipasha Basu and Anil Kapoor as cameos. And let me tell you, this film is GOLD!
Of course no regard is given to plot and narrative or even character developement. Aditya Malhotra (Kumar) is engaged to Sonia Berry (Basu), while Jia Yashwardhan (Kaif) to Karan Oberoi (Kapoor) but they eventually fall in love, courtesy, destiny and end up being together after cheating on their partners though.
We are not getting to all the technical aspects of the film but how does a winter night turn into an autumn morning, which eventually turns into summer? And how great is the power of destiny to make you meet the same person over and over again? And do two people (Adi and Jia) have no regard for their fiances that they are busy flirting with each other?
The film is so logic-less that at a point, Kaif and Kumar are driving through Kashmir (which we are told is Canada) and Kaif’s Jia tells Adi that it is her dream to go to Kashmir. They hold hands, shut their eyes and abrakadabra, they are in freaking Kashmir, dancing to a song in outfits that shout SUMMER! Also, later, Sonia takes a flight from Paris to Canada, stays in Canada for a few hours, only to fly back to London. And during the months that Adi and Sonia have spent apart, they never spoke a word to each other – not even a mail! WHAT DID I JUST WATCH!
If you haven’t watched the film, you wouldn’t know that Jia and Karan eventually get married but right after they are married, Karan catches Jia hugging Adi and he asks her:
Kya tumne khud ko usko saupa hai?
I mean, bro, are you asking her if she’s a virgin? Because she didn’t get the hint!
After this scene, magically, Karan goes through a character transformation and breaks off Jia’s mangalsutra and gives (patriarchy approaching) her the permission and liberty to lead her life with Adi instead of him.
All this while Sonia (Adi’s fiance), who has been dancing in the background comes ahead and says:
They are mad in each others love
But I truly believe that this is definitely not what she wanted to say but had to because if rich and influential Karan Oberoi has accepted the fact that Adi and Jia are in love, how can she not! Also, he is single now (wink wink)!
