There isn’t and can never be any doubt about Deepika Padukone’s stardom and talent. She had won hearts with just her debut, Om Shanti Om, and then over films like Ram Leela, Cocktail, Piku, Padmaavat and more she made herself one of the finest actors we have seen in Hindi Cinema. After Padmaavat, everyone has been waiting for her to announce her next film, which was supposed to be Vishal Bharadwaj’s Sapna Didi, but due to Irrfan Khan’s health issues, that film has been delayed.
Talking about the powerful roles that are written for women today and women-centric films, she said at an event, “I wouldn’t say there is a dearth. I definitely feel like it’s getting a little repetitive, though. I think it (roles for women) has changed already. I don’t think women in film today are in a place where they have to wait — or look — for a strong female part. It’s all there. Now, it really boils down to the specific content: whether a particular film excites a particular actor or not.”
She also spoke about the current ‘biopic’ trend and said, “I feel like there are too many biopics being made. In the last few months, I can’t count the number of biopics that we’ve been offered. And they’re all great; they’re very strong and powerful. But when it comes to a film, after a point, how much are you going to tell me about those struggles? Even a common man on the street has had a similar journey, if you ask me.”
What are your thoughts on what Padukone had to say?
