The biggest problem with most of our cinema is that we don’t let the women shine, especially if it is an Akshay Kumar film. Barring Naam Shabana (Taapsee Pannu), in which Kumar had a cameo, none of his leading ladies are allowed to prosper. Mission Mangal, a film based on India’s impossible Mangalyaan, which eventually of course was possible – should be a women lead project, because that was the reality of it. But here, it is made a man lead film, with women following his directions.
The film is about this mission, and how Kumar and Vidya Balan bring together a team of unprofessionals to execute this mission. I don’t want to comment on the gender apathy that I see coming unless and until I watch the film. Till then, the trailer is very promising, with some great performances by Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menon, Sonakshi Sinha and Kirti Kulhari.
