Aarya: Sushmita Sen makes a powerful comeback

When Ram Madhvani (Neerja) writes and directs a show, you expect it to be well packed, as was his Neerja. This time, he’s back with a show on Disney Plus Hotstar, titled Aarya, with Sushmita Sen in the lead, who makes a comeback after 10 years.

Aarya is a remake of the Dutch series Penoza. Announcing her comeback on Instagram last year, the former Miss Universe had written, “I have always been in awe of love that knows patience. This alone makes me a fan of my fans. They have waited 10 long years for my return to the screen, and lovingly encouraging me every step of the way throughout my hiatus… unconditionally! I return just for you.”

The show begins off as a story of a family – a couple in love, a house, children. But seconds into the trailer, you see that it is about a dark world that lies beneath the happiness. Aarya’s (Sen) husband has been killed and she takes over his business of illegal medicines. But, the real challenge is to protect her family.

Sushmita Sen had earlier said, “Aarya represents strength, determination and above all vulnerability in a world full of crime, a world run by men. For me, it is the story of family, betrayal and a mother who is willing to go to any length to protect her children. It took me a decade to find a role like this to sink into and I’m thrilled to be a part of this incredible story.”

In a statement, Madhvani promised, “Every character has a purpose in Aarya’s journey as she goes from being a homemaker to a hardened criminal. I spent many years trying to build this world brick-by-brick, but I didn’t do it alone – 588 others from the cast and crew have built this show from the ground up.”

Also starring Chandrachur Singh, Namit Das, Sikandar Kher, Manish Chaudhari, Vinod Rawat, Ankur Bhatia, Alexx O’Nell and Sugandha Garg among others, Aarya releases on June 19 only on Disney Plus Hotstar.
